Harmful Behaviour

At Sheringham High School we define harmful behaviour as behaviour, action or a habit which could have a detrimental effect on a young person.

We take the health and well- being of our students seriously and we aim to provide them with a wide range of appropriate information, support and advice to enable them to manage everyday difficulties which they may face. Our curriculum provision offers an extensive range of themes around health and well- being and allows for age appropriate discussion in a safe environment (see curriculum pages for more information).

Examples of harmful behaviour might include:

  • Self-injury (deliberately harming or injuring oneself)
  • Self-neglect (poor diet, poor hygiene, lack of sleep)
  • Substance misuse including alcohol and drugs
  • Prolonged emotional difficulties (anger, anxiety, tearfulness, withdrawal)

Procedures and responses

When we notice that a young person in our care is displaying or is at risk of harmful behaviours, we will;

  • Take it seriously
  • Try to engage with the young person, encourage them to speak with their family and support them to take the lead to identify the help they need
  • Offer appropriate support which could include the opportunity to speak with a Student Manager as well as an appropriately trained professional; e.g. Community Youth Worker, Police, etc.

Confidentiality

It is always our goal, where appropriate, to involve the families of the young people with whom we are working and we will always support them to do this themselves. Depending upon the age of the young person and in some circumstances this may not happen immediately. However, any communication or action taken will always be in the best interests of each individual.

If you require further information or need help to support a young person, please contact

 Mr B Phillips, Deputy Headteacher.
