Sheringham High School MFL Department is a dynamic, enthusiastic department; a collaborative approach to teaching and learning is embedded within daily practice and future planning. The department endeavours to make learning languages fun and meaningful, providing pupils with many opportunities for collaboration and independent work in each lesson.
With skilled linguists in the department, we endeavour to challenge our pupils by using a high ratio of target language. It is also one of our departments aims to encourage pupils to use the target language with each other in pair and group work.
We believe that becoming confident with a language is a springboard to creativity both in and out the classroom. Within the classroom, we encourage pupils to take part in role-plays entirely in the target language, or pupils work independently to challenge their writing skills.
We pride ourselves on having a 'Languages for all' policy and are delighted to offer French, German and Spanish at KS3 and beyond. We firmly believe that every child has the right to be curious about the world they live in through the study of the language, geography and culture of French, German and Spanish speaking countries. It is our purpose to cultivate well-rounded global citizens who sustain a life-long love of learning and an acceptance of cultural diversity.
Providing opportunities to promote in cultural understanding is a vital element of language learning. We are therefore committed to ensuring that students are able to connect with French and German-speaking countries through trips abroad. We regularly run trips to Paris in the summer term, Cologne at Christmas time and Boulogne in the spring. Other established links include, collaborating with the Sheringham twinning association, pen pal projects, theatre trips, film club, primary taster sessions, and much more! We are always exploring new ways to engage our students with languages and in recent years, students put on school productions of Snow White in German and Cinderella in French!
